CARNFORTH Railway Station has been voted one of the seven ‘must see’ man-made additions to a British holiday. To celebrate British Tourism Week 2011, which runs until March 21, www.uktourism.co.uk has created a list of seven man-made additions to the British holiday experience and among the best of the best is Carnforth Station, setting of the movie Brief Encounter. Train enthusiasts and film buffs will see eye to eye on a visit to Carnforth Railway Station, restored to its former glory in recent years, and the location for the filming of Brief Encounter in 1945.
The venues are spread across the four corners of Britain and offer entertainment for film buffs, historian, theatre lovers and tea connoisseurs to name but a few. Ginna Clark from www.uktourism.co.uk said: “Britain is home to a vast array of tourist attractions, but not all get the attention they deserve. “Some of these you may have heard of, but others are still waiting to be discovered. “With the British weather being one of the few things that can let you down on a British holiday, it pays to be armed with a choice of different things to see and do.

“The POW” is a new film set in 1944 produced by Lunar films; directed by John Hamlett and starring Ben Worth. The title music was performed by German pianist Walter Gieseking who famously recorded a concert in Berlin in 1944 despite the background noise of an air raid.

The Plot:
A bitter winter approaches as fierce fighting moves towards Germany's borders. After four long years of captivity a British prisoner risks his life to escape. Why run? Why take the chance when the war may even be over by Christmas?
The rail yard scenes were filmed in Carnforth; the same location as David Lean's ' Brief Encounter' (1945) and the home of the real Hogwarts Express steam train. Many of Carnforth's rail yard buildings, including the iconic coaling tower, were built in WW2 by Italian prisoners.
The film was shot entirely in two days in December when the temperature never rose above freezing. To speed up shooting, the only sound recorded on location was the central character's dialogue in the interrogation scene.
